Sharpen your criminal court skills, take care of your mental health as an interpreter, and update your tech and ethics toolkit with a mix of live weekend intensives and self-paced, non–instructor-led courses designed for court interpreters.
These offerings are designed to help you earn CIMCE/CE credits while focusing on real-world practice in criminal proceedings, language access, and interpreter well-being.

A practical overview of digital tools to manage terminology, create glossaries, and streamline your prep and workflow before court. - Implicit Bias & Cultural Mediation for Interpreters (3 CIMCE)
Self-paced exploration of implicit bias and cultural dynamics in legal settings, and how interpreters can support fairness without stepping outside the interpreter role.

Weekend Live Intensive (Instructor-Led)
Spend one focused weekend strengthening high-impact skills for criminal proceedings and forensic settings. The same structure is offered on several dates so you can pick what works best.

Interpreter Resilience & Vicarious Trauma in Court Settings
A practical session on recognizing vicarious trauma and chronic stress, understanding how court and criminal calendars impact interpreters, and building realistic self-care, debriefing, and peer-support strategies.

Legal Transcription & Translation in Criminal Proceedings
Techniques and guided practice for working with de-identified recordings of statements, hearings, and forensic audio. We will cover accuracy, dealing with poor sound, formatting conventions, and terminology for criminal cases.

Interpreting for Mental Competency Evaluations
Linguistic and ethical considerations for interpreting during mental competency evaluations, including key psychiatric and legal terminology, handling disorganized or delusional speech, understanding standardized instruments, and how competency findings affect criminal proceedings.

Safety and Security for Interpreters: Awareness, Risk Reduction, and Coordination with Court Security
This training equips interpreters with practical, role-appropriate strategies for personal safety, including identifying high-risk moments, applying time and distance principles, recognizing early aggression indicators, and coordinating effectively with court security personnel.

Language Justice & Indigenous Communities
Indigenous language speakers face critical barriers to justice in California courts due to the scarcity of qualified interpreters. This session explores the legal and social consequences of that gap, challenges common misconceptions, and draws on real-world court experiences to offer actionable solutions.
Sunday | 3:30–5:30 PM PT (2 CIMCE/CE)
Interpreting for Victims & Witnesses in Criminal Proceedings
Victims and witnesses present unique challenges—from trauma-affected speech and reluctant testimony to the special accommodations required for children. This session covers the legal framework interpreters must understand, including Marsy’s Law rights, witness immunity advisements, and child witness protections under California law.
