Legal Interpreting Lab: Weekend Intensives + Self-Paced Courses (CIMCE)

Sharpen your criminal court skills, take care of your mental health as an interpreter, and update your tech and ethics toolkit with a mix of live weekend intensives and self-paced, non–instructor-led courses designed for court interpreters.

These offerings are designed to help you earn CIMCE credits while focusing on real-world practice in criminal proceedings, language access, and interpreter well-being.

Self-Paced, Non–Instructor-Led Courses (15 CIMCE Total Available)

Take these on your own schedule, at your own pace. Each course includes readings, practice activities, and a short assessment.

  • Language Access Law & the Interpreter’s Duty (3 CIMCE)
    Overview of language access frameworks (with a focus on courts) and the interpreter’s role in protecting due process and equal access for LEP court users.
  • Working With Bilingual Attorneys: Communication Protocols (3 CIMCE)
    Practical tools for setting boundaries, managing expectations, and collaborating ethically and effectively when attorneys and staff switch between languages.
  • Sight Translation for Legal Documents: Guided Practice (3 CIMCE)
    Step-by-step sight translation practice with common legal documents, focusing on accuracy, register, punctuation, and flow.
  • Digital Tools for Court Interpreters: Glossaries & Workflow (3 CIMCE)
    A practical overview of digital tools to manage terminology, create glossaries, and streamline your prep and workflow before court.
  • Implicit Bias & Cultural Mediation for Interpreters (3 CIMCE)
    Self-paced exploration of implicit bias and cultural dynamics in legal settings, and how interpreters can support fairness without stepping outside the interpreter role.

You can register for individual self-paced courses or choose the full self-paced/non-instructor led bundle (15 CIMCE).


Weekend Live Intensive (Instructor-Led – 8 CIMCE)

Spend one focused weekend strengthening high-impact skills for criminal proceedings and forensic settings. The same structure is offered on several dates so you can pick what works best.

Total: 8 instructor-led CIMCE/CEU in one weekend
Format: Live on Zoom (with participation, Q&A, and practice)

Friday (2 CIMCE)
Interpreter Resilience & Vicarious Trauma in Court Settings (2 CIMCE)
A practical session on recognizing vicarious trauma and chronic stress, understanding how court and criminal calendars impact interpreters, and building realistic self-care, debriefing, and peer-support strategies.

Saturday Morning (3 CIMCE)
Legal Transcription & Translation in Criminal Proceedings (3 CIMCE)
Techniques and guided practice for working with de-identified recordings of statements, hearings, and forensic audio. We will cover accuracy, dealing with poor sound, formatting conventions, and terminology for criminal cases.

Saturday Afternoon (3 CIMCE)
Interpreting for Mental Competency Evaluations (3 CIMCE)
Linguistic and ethical considerations for interpreting during mental competency evaluations, including key psychiatric and legal terminology, handling disorganized or delusional speech, understanding standardized instruments, and how competency findings affect criminal proceedings.
