COURSE DESCRIPTION
Bilingual attorneys and legal staff frequently interact with interpreters in court and out-of-court settings. While shared language ability can facilitate communication, it can also create role confusion, informal interpreting expectations, improper waivers of language access, and ethical risk for interpreters.
This self-paced course examines communication protocols and professional boundaries when working with bilingual attorneys in legal settings. Participants will analyze realistic scenarios involving attorney interpretation, improper language access practices, direct attorney-client communication issues, and interpreter intervention duties.
The course emphasizes institutional language access principles, interpreter neutrality, and professional communication strategies designed to protect both the interpreter and the integrity of proceedings.
