This four-hour terminology virtual workshop will delve into everyday terms used in Spanish from different regions, namely, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, with some phraseological “false friends” included. Participants will be able to identify Spanish variations/different equivalents of one English word depending on the region where Spanish is spoken. A terminology development section is included as part of the introduction. Practice in the consecutive and simultaneous modes will be the focus of this workshop using the terms reviewed during the introduction. Participants will receive a comparative glossary, copies of consecutive and simultaneous scripts for practice, and some recordings of their renderings.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Identify the Spanish-speaking country/region where an specific word is used
2. Find the equivalent in American English of several variations of the same word in Spanish
3. Avoid using false cognates for everyday life phrases, while finding the Spanish equivalent according to their preferred Spanish-speaking country/region
4. Build up on glossary-development skills to expand the comparative glossary provided in this workshop

Participants will earn four (4) California CIMCE, ATA CEPs, and CCHI/CEAP CEs.
