Identifying Speakers of Indigenous Languages: Tips for Spanish Interpreters.
This class addresses the issues faced by Spanish court & medical interpreters when they are called to interpret for Spanish limited proficiency individuals who are members of a Latin American indigenous group. Attendees will learn about Latin America’s linguistic diversity and the challenges indigenous populations face, especially considering the dominant language of their country of origin: Spanish. Lorena will also cover how to identify the linguistic characteristics, both phonetically and grammatically, associated with speakers of one of the many languages used by indigenous peoples. Attendees will also learn how this knowledge will allow them to be compliant with the “proficient performance” obligation set forth in the court and medical interpreter canons.
